- The results showed a significant correlation of microorganisms and water temperature and, as
a consequence, of the number of bathers in the water and the time bathers spent in the water.
In the children’s area (flat water) the concentration of indicator microorganisms rose
significantly to much steeper levels with increasing numbers of visitors than in deeper water.
The statistical evaluation of data showed an almost linear correlation between mean value and
standard deviation, the variance being the square of the mean. A loglinear model was
developed assuming that temperature, numbers of bathers in the water at the time of
monitoring and the location exert a particularly strong influence on the behaviour of faecal
coliforms. As shown in diagram 1, the model developed correlates very well with the data
actually gathered.
